Come out, stay in…who cares?
So the big news is Tom Daley’s gay! It’s true, it’s official – Tom Daley has said it himself, he came out on a YouTube video he posted, he said he’s in a relationship with a man. Now some of you (the ones who aren’t saying “who the hell is Tom Daley”) might be applauding his bravery; some might be questioning his wisdom; some might be thinking: well that is disgusting or wrong or unchristian etc.
I think what the f*** has that got to do with me? Why is this any of my business?
HOW IS THIS NEWS??????
I don’t care! I don’t care if he dresses up as Santa Claus and does a medal winning dive off the top of Nelson’s Column (yes he’s a diver by the way) as long as he doesn’t land on me. I don’t care if he decides he’s gay, straight, bi or actually fancies the hole in a fence. It is not my business and it is not bloody news! Why are real issues being pushed off the front pages of the (somehow) popular newspapers to be replaced by absolute crap?
It doesn’t seem to matter that there are actual hopes of peace in the Middle East because there are another batch of Z-list celebrities eating testicles in a jungle somewhere. Wake me up when it’s their own testicles they are eating. I agree with Jack Dee when he said the only way to make it worth watching is if a Japanese soldier, who didn’t know the war was over, came out of the jungle and started shooting them!
It doesn’t seem to matter that, in what I understand is the 6th largest economy in the world, elderly people will be dying of hyperthermia this winter because they can’t afford to heat their home. Even the Queen is suffering it seems because she applied for heating allowance from the public purse. Yes that’s right, the world’s biggest landowner and one of the richest women on the planet wanted some of the money set aside for the elderly and infirm so she could heat her many palaces.
It doesn’t seem to matter that so much of the country is being crippled by austerity measures to replace the money we gave to the banks to prop them up; at the same time there were tax cuts for the rich in the budget. It doesn’t matter that in towns and cities all over the country food banks are appearing so families have something to give their kids to eat. Why doesn’t it matter? It doesn’t matter because there are pictures in the papers of the lovely Duchess of Cambridge who has a flat stomach so soon after giving birth to our future king.
So Tom, I’m glad you’re happy mate, I’m pleased that you have found someone to care for, but please just keep it to yourself eh? Come out, stay in…I honestly couldn’t care less.

My first thought was who the hell is he, and why should I care if he wishes to be a rear gunner,,,, for Gods sake keep this shit to yourself… as for tax cuts for the rich… the poor shall inherit the earth…

Daley was in the Olympics as a high diver apparently. (I don’t really watch those type of sports to be honest)
If he says he’s a rear gunner who the hell am I to argue… high diver or not, in the Olympics or not… keep your sexual preference to your self is what I say…
“Religion is the opium of the masses” not anymore, that would be TV and celebrity fuckwits dingly dangling in the jungle probably out of their small brains on opium or related narcotics. And of course you’re right we are nurturing a generation of wannabes to fill the reality TV shows yet to be made. It’s all smoke screen to deflect our attention from real issues like HUMANITY. In theory, I agree with you – nobody should have to make these sorts of public announcements about intimate matters, it should not be news.
However. There are scores of young men out there, in the closet, suffering and ashamed of something they can’t help. Suicide rates among young gay males are astronomical. So, somebody who’s a successful and much admired elite sports person coming out might provide a role model for some and offer a modicum of moral support. Unlike celebrities standing in vats filled with millipedes, TD’s proclamation may actually be of some use.
The Queen’s applied for what…? How the hell did I miss that?!?
It’s not the fact that he came out, it’s the way it gets reported – too much nudge nudge wink wink journalism, making it seem seedy and perverse. Also reporting it like its the biggest story in the world.
Absolutely – if it were reported on in an appropriate manner, it could actually do some good. But that’s not what sells newspapers, as we all know 😦
Loved the post! Being a yank I really don’t understand the star struck Hierarchy of the royal family. I remember my mother visiting family in England. When she said something negatively about their majesties, for a while she thought she might be sent back home tarred and feathered. About the gays…I have no problem with them coming out, and the news, oh hell, we all know every news origination is going for the ratings.I have a daughter who is gay.When she understood I accepted it, she seemed to always want to talk about the subject. Finally I told her, she knows it and I know and accept it. But bringing it to our doorstep day in and day out is not going to put us on your bandwagon. Lord, just live life the way you want! Nothing more and nothing less.
Live and let live. As for the royals, you have to be careful who you are talking to about them, I’ve got into one or two quite heated arguments over them. Many people seem to love them but I’m not really a fan as you may have noticed.
I don’t disagree with you but, to you it’s non-news and boy do I understand that but to some poor kid being bullied it might feel a little less insecure that an athlete hero came out. Ego identification matters to kids forming their self-esteem; and bullying, intolerance, are still news in terms of victims, suicides, kids suffering, so to that extend, bring it out, make it known, but to keep it playing as the news of the day, nah… move on. All that blah blah aside, I love how you wrote this–your writing is just so damn refreshing and I’m a fan. Hope both our skin is thick enough for us to agree to disagree. Sorry to disappoint you but I actually do agree with you. ☺ The tabloids will twist these things to appeal to their small minded readership thus feeding their prejudice. If they behaved like professionals or even human beings then they might help rather than hinder in this issue. Then maybe, just maybe some teenage kid won’t sit crying in his or her room because they have nobody they can turn to and nobody to talk to about how they feel.

This one is simple to answer/address. It’s not the issue, the individual, the content, or the media. It’s the people who click on digital stories, buy supermarket tabloids, and fuel themselves on sensationalism, gore and greed. The media would have nothing to report and be out of business if people stopped reading, buying and propagating non-worthy “news.” For these and other reasons, I ceased owning a and watching TV 14 years ago. I haven’t purchased or read a newspaper or magazine during the same period. If people would just pull their heads out of oblivion, we’d never hear about the Kardashian’s, et. al. As for this Daley bloke, who cares how he chooses to live his life. It’s his choice.
If people didn’t want to read crap then the media would be forced to write decent stuff. Yet so many have no interest in what’s happening in the world and are scared of facing the reality of their lives, they need the media to tell them what to think, feel, buy and they need figures to hate.
